Mission-critical infrastructure is usually discussed in terms of availability, reliability, performance, security, and recovery. Yet the most consequential moments in these environments are also ethical moments: a technician or engineer must decide what to change, what not to change, when to intervene, when to escalate, what risks to communicate, and how to preserve evidence and accountability while an organization is under operational pressure. This article presents a practical, author-proposed

Authored by Professor Savvas Papagiannidis, Vice Chair of the IEEE SSIT Socio-Technical Systems Technical Committee, this book supports doctoral researchers and early-career academics as they transition from PhD study into professional life. It explores the often-unspoken ethical dimensions of academic careers, including how to build an identity grounded in integrity rather than metrics alone. It helps emerging academics build careers that are not only successful, but principled and sustainable.
